GWM Haval records the strongest growth in the top 10 best-selling automakers of 2025

January 15, 2026

South Africa’s new-vehicle market in 2025 delivered some of the most competitive sales performances in recent years, and one of the standout performers has been GWM Haval and the broader GWM family of brands. According to the latest sales data reported by NAAMSA (National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa) and industry analysts, GWM achieved the strongest year-on-year growth among the Top 10 best-selling automakers, cementing its status as a major player in the local automotive landscape.

On the back of this robust growth, GWM climbed three positions from its 2024 ranking to finish in 6th place overall in 2025. Its highest position yet in the full national sales charts. The Baoding-based automotive firm, which encompasses several sub-brands including Haval, Tank and Ora, recorded 27 202 units sold in 2025, a remarkable 43.7% increase compared with the previous year. Its market share rose from 3.7% in 2024 to 4.6% in 2025, and by doing so GWM reclaimed the title of South Africa’s best-selling Chinese automaker.

A Significant Shift in the South African Market

The broader South African market in 2025 recorded meaningful growth overall, with strong consumer demand pushing new-vehicle sales higher than in previous years. Many global and legacy brands improved their volumes and market share, but GWM’s swift climb highlights a notable shift in consumer behaviour towards more value-oriented, feature-rich vehicles, particularly in segments where GWM and Haval SUVs compete.

While established manufacturers like Toyota, Suzuki and Volkswagen continued to lead the rankings, GWM’s performance this year has been one of the most significant among mainstream brands. Rising brands such as GWM and Chery reflect a broader trend of Chinese manufacturers gaining traction in South Africa, supported by improved product quality, competitive pricing and comprehensive ownership packages.

What This Means for GWM and Haval

GWM’s growth in South Africa is driven in no small part by the popularity of models such as the Haval Jolion and H6, which continue to attract buyers thanks to their strong specification levels, safety features and real-world appeal. The brand’s expanding lineup, which now includes a range of SUVs, crossovers, pick-ups and electric models under the Haval, Tank and Ora banners, gives it a broad footprint across multiple market segments.

This momentum has particular significance for GWM Haval dealerships, as it positions the brand not just as a niche competitor, but as a mainstream contender capable of challenging long-established players in South Africa’s automotive market. Achieving 6th place overall, ahead of several traditional players, underscores both the strength of GWM’s product offerings and the growing acceptance of Chinese automotive brands among South African buyers.

Continued Growth Potential

Looking forward, the sector is poised for further evolution. Industry observers note that the South African market is increasingly receptive to affordable and well-equipped vehicles, especially as economic pressures shift buyers’ priorities toward value and practicality. This trend plays directly into GWM’s strategy, which combines advanced safety and technology features with competitive pricing.

Combined with an expanding dealer network and strong after-sales support, GWM and Haval are well-positioned to build on this growth and continue capturing market share in the years ahead.
